Two more solvy bookmarks using ultra solvy with fabric scraps. This time I raided my crazy quilt scrap supply that has lots of unusual fabric many of them cut from old dresses found at thrift stores.

This is my trial book mark made by stitching little tidbits of fabric etc between a solvy sandwich. I used ultra solvy because I already had some. I have ordered some super solvy to see if I like that better. It is probably over stitched. I just can't seem to stop.

Banquet table

The theme for the Ecumenical Lenten services this year is feasting and fasting. Today the theme was the Great banquet or as it was called in Matthew 22 the parable of the wedding banquet. The planners chose to use the theme all are invited. I was asked to create an art project and I chose to do a banquet table. I used a narrow card table and covered it with a patchwork table cloth in rainbow colors to signify inclusiveness. I used two place settings and a center piece of a large gourd filled with dried plants and a cross made from dried cholla. I spray painted everything with gold. All of the dishes etc came from a thrift shop. I even spray painted a couple of wooden chairs I got at the thrift store.

I made up a little invitation to hand to everybody inviting them to the banquet. I also included a little about the symbolisnm of the various items and colors.

I worked many hours on the table cloth and I knew it would never be finished so I said I would use it just as it was on the day. I was putting a border around it last evening when my sewing machine quit. So I hand basted the edge and pinned it to the back side. I felt like the people on Project Runway, sewing their models into their outfits just before runway time.

I am not really a quilter so I didn't call it a quilt but it may grow up to be a quilt someday.

One of the first things I learned about when I moved to Grinnell in March 2006 was the wonderful ecumenical Lenten services held every Wednesday at a different church, with a little lunch served afterwards. I look forward to attending these every year.

This year I was invited to participate by doing a visual project for one of the services. The planners are trying to bring in different arts including visual, music and poetry. I am the only visual artist and they pretty much gave me freedom to design the project.

The theme is feasting and fasting and my project is going to be "Feasting" centering around the parable of the wedding banquet. Now I am not ready to reveal too many details of my project yet, but I am hard at work on a rainbow table covering. I am not going to call it a quilt, at least not yet, as I am not a real quilter. But I am a color person at heart and I am loving using the rainbow of fabrics I have gathered to make blocks.

Finally getting around to posting photos of my final results for the snow dyeing. All of my experimenting paid off and I am pleased with the results. I have shipped off some pieces and received some beautiful pieces back in the swap.

These are done on prepared for dyeing Kona cotton.

Ice painting

I read somewhere a long time ago about painting outside in below freezing temps. I decided to try it recently during our ice storm. I used a piece of light weight canvas and hung it outside for a few hours. Then I brought it in laid it on a rack and painted it with Stewart Gill fabric paints. The fabric thawed so quickly it was really not icy while I was finishing the painting. But, I am not going to paint outside during an ice storm so my ice painting is not quite authentic.You can see the ridges made by the rack in the photo. This is before I ironed it to set the paint.

The two red pieces and the purple/blue/red a couple of posts below are all made from a white sheet an exchange student left at my house a couple of years ago.

I bought the supplies from Dharma Trading company

I prewashed the fabric in Synthropol. Then I soaked it in a soda ash solution. While it was soaking I prepared my urea and salt chemical water. I laid the fabric out on several different types of racks. The article I read in Art Quilting stated that she used a piece of plexiglass and tilted it into a pan so that the fabric did not sit in the excess dye. I used two small pieces of plexi tilted in my favorite pan (it is designed for fish cleaning and sold at sporting goods stores).

I also used a small baking rack over a dish pan and a shoe box sized plastic box. In the bottom of the plastic box I placed some bubble wrap with really large bubbles. I also slanted this so the dye would run down.

I then put the wet fabric on the racks and covered it with snow.

I mixed the dye two tables spoons to a half cup of chemical water. Then poured it on over the snow. I then covered it with plastic bags and left it overnight.

The next day I sprayed all of the fabric with warm water, wrung it out and hung it to dry. I will wash it with synthrapol in a few days.

Blue on black and white

You can get a good dark blue with this process. I made up a chemical mix of urea and table salt and mixed it with the blue dye. I just added half a cup of water to 2 tablespoons of dye.

I laid the fabric out on a rack slightly tilted and then covered it with snow. Then I covered it with plastic and left it overnight. I rinsed this fabric with warm water (I have a hose with a sprayer in the basement and I just sprayed the water on) Very little actually rinsed out and the final rinse came out clear.

This is the sumi paper while it was being dyed and after it dried. I used some radiant rain and some alcohol inks which gave it much deeper colors than the cloth.

I have been reading about snow dyeing and since we have piles of snow all around I decided to give it a try. I just used what I already had around and it wasn't the best dye for the projects. Most of my results are quite faded looking. I am ordering new dye to try to get better results.

This is what the snow dyeing process looks like. You put down your fabric (or paper) on a rack and then pile on the snow. Then you pour on the dye. As the snow melts the fabric gets dyed.

This is a close up of a piece that I painted heavily and then scratched with the brush handle. This is some of the Stewart Gill fabric paint that I bought recently, such a beautiful color, magenta.

Liberated quilting

Last fall when I was first interested in quilting, I checked Gwen Marston's book Liberated Quilting out from the library. I really love her quilts and ideas. I started making little houses shown in her book and then decided to make them into a quilt for Miles. Now let's face it, what I knew about making a quilt could be put in a thimble. So I just made it up as I went along. This is the result. I backed it with fleece and tied it with crochet cotton and some buttons. It is not just "liberated" it is down right odd. I keep looking over my shoulder to see if the quilt Police are coming. Lots of the fabric I got from Guinevere, my dear daughter in law and some of them were left over from the crib sheets and accessories she made when he was a baby.

My first efforts at paper cloth making. The first one is three pieces drying at the very beginning stage. The other is tea bags on white (!) muslin, some how or other it looks pink.

The pink one in the middle of the 3 pieces is old magazine pages that I put under another project that I was spraying radiant rain on to. I saved them and used them in this project. Keeping with my plan to use whatever is at hand.

The dark blue is black and white napkins that have been inked over with a Colorbook brand dauber, and then I added alcohol inks and topped that with some radiant rain and sprayed with workable fixative to keep the rr from running. The center piece has been painted and inked and the one with leaves is basically muslin and come old book pages.

Cloth paper made on muslin and gingham. You are supposed to use white muslin but I could not resist using green gingham checked fabric that I bought recently. The pink one is patterned tissue paper and some paper that had radiant rain on it which caused the pink tint.

Another new experience

I decided to try making a crazy quilt block and this is the result. I have started doing a little hand embroidery on it. I am not sure what I will do with this block. It was just stuff I have around the house left over from other projects. It's fun but I don't think I would make one this big again and I am going to experiment with ways to do the top stitching by machine. That may take some of the fun out of it, however.

Well yesterday I decided to dive in and make a little pieced block. I used the style of the liberated quilter, Gwen Marston. This is about the size of a postcard, so I have a ways to go, but this much was lots of fun.

I decided to try making a fabric post card and discovered it was fun. I have not sewed in years and my sewing machine is 40 years old this year. I used some very heavy two sided fusible interfacing as an inside. The fabric is some that I dyed a long time ago for a project and this is just a left over scrap.

The colors in the original photo reminded me of the many photos I have from New Mexico. I added some scenes from San Augustin an almost ghost town in north eastern New Mexico. I used images of a crumbling old ruin of a house, a church, and a cemetery stone from 1888. I also have superimposed a scene from Chaco canyon. The woman's face is from a collage I did years ago. I Can't remember her name now.

ATC Workshop

Last Thursday I held an ATC workshop for the high school art club. It was so easy to do. I just took over my collection of atc's in their plastic pages. I took a lot of paper and brads and punches. I also took a bunch of paint chips and some old greeting cards. The school provided paper, glue. pens and pencils. The students came and went as their time allowed and seemed to have a great time. They created wonderful cards and proudly penned them to the bulletin board. Both boys and girls actively participated. I hope I can do this again soon.

High school workshop

After my show in September, I was invited to visit a high school sculpture class to show them how I work. Now I am invited to give a workshop at the High school all conference Art Day i n mid April. It is going to be called rcycled sculpture and jewelry. I met with the teachers the other day for planning and I took a few very rough pieces that I propose for the students to make. I will provide a variety of materials and they can make whatever they want. The catch is that the length of the workshop is 45 minutes, so not much detailed art will be done.

I found those great reflective letters at the auction. They are aluminum I think, very light weight and easily cut and punched.

My husband woke me up yesterday by saying "Hurry, or we will miss all the good stuff." Actually the great thing about auctions is you don't have to be early to get the good stuff like you do at a garage sale. No matter when you get there, if there was any good stuff you still have a chance to get it.

Yesterday the auction was indoors, good thing since it was miserably cold and windy outdoors. There was a big crowd when we got there, people from all walks of life looking for a bargain, or just a chance to get out and see something or somebody different. February is like that in Iowa, we look for things to do just to get out of the house.

And, yes there was great stuff. Or maybe it just depends on what you are looking for. Great stuff is in the eye of the beholder. I am always on the look out for small items for my found object jewelry and sculptures. Hubby is in search of the perfect tool. It is always fun to see how the sale unfolds. We walk around and inspect tables laden with boxes of junk all jumbled together. Sometimes these are estate sales and sometimes people are just decluttering. You usually have to buy the whole box so you get the junk along with your treasures. Sometimes something that you think is junk will go for lots of money. And sometimes just the opposite. There were several lots of buttons and they all went for over $10. On the other hand, after waiting until 3 in the afternoon I grabbed a baggy of silver plated forks for $1. In order to get the buttons I got a box of crochet cotton thread and some wool. Now I have to figure out what to do with this thread, since I don't crochet.

My three year old grandson misses absolutely nothing. The first time he came over after I hung the paper evolution project in the yard he commented: "Oma has a Christmas Tree".

I can see my paper being slowly altered by the weather outside my window. I looked closely today and I don't see much change, except for the book in the flower pot and it is very wet. The snow around it has mostly melted but there may be more tonight.

I just can't help it, I'm a Gemini. I'm always of two minds about everything. This or that? I have several blogs most of which are fairly neglected. I started this one last year for my Bricolage show. I also have another blog Evolutions and Transformations. I was going to make that my primary blog until I realized that I have linked this one to the Natural Evolution Collaboration. So I have renamed this one and this will be blog #one.

I have been reading some amazing blogs and I have resolved to do what I can to upgrade mine and make it fun and interesting.....as well as up to date. Blogger is much more user friendly than when I started.

The Altered Page: Natural Evolution

Seth at The Altered page has a winter project of placing bundles of paper in the outdoors to observe the natural evolution. He invited others to particpate with their own projects.

I put my project outside today. Using my theme of Bricolage, I just gathered up some stuff I have around the studio. I did some magazine pages, some paper towels, some coffee filters and tea bags and a book.

I wrapped the bundles in different kinds of wire. The book I splashed some paint on and then wrapped it in aluminum mesh. I hung my bundles on a tree branch sculpture that I made in front of my house. I can watch the fun out my front window.

This is a hollowed out book covered with modeling paste. The wire is from a wire basket I got at a garage sale recently. The rusty thing on the top edge is part of a mower, I think, that I found on the grounds of the high school. The eye shaped thing is the handle to some kind of silver bowl.

I love this term, detritus, and keep thinking of it as I go through all the accumulated junk I have. I hope to do a series of pieces with this in mind. This first one is about stuff that we throw away regularly. It contains a couple of computer boards, an old cd, bottle cap, can lid, car door handle, styrene foam and plastic packaging from something.

This girl started after I was looking at some pictures on line of Dada Dolls. I used a tiny chocolate tin and an old doll. Her top is a plastic bag melted with a heat gun right on to her body (ouch! she said) the bottom is a recycled tea bag.

This started out with the drink mixer thing in the center and was going to be a doll. I was never satisfied with the way he looked. I had the book that had been glued shut. textured and had buttons glued on. I decided to combine the two projects and thus created Book People.

This is yet another RD condensed book. It is closed and glued together. I hollowed out a large space in the middle. In it is a little Japanese box, a discarded watch that someone sent me (it was still ticking the last time I looked) and some metal found objects.

A friend gave me some old jewelery and buttons that she wanted to discard. In the box was this wonderful giraffe. I decided to honor him with a shadow box that housed an old spice men's gift in a former life. Old encyclopedia pages covered the back and I added some occotillo skeletons to the jewelry from the box.

Again, this started with a RD condensed book, opened, folded an pressed. It is painted with nickle azo gold highlighted with some red and purples. I used furniture tacks and some wire for the finishing touches.

I started with a Readers Digest Condensed book opened flat to the middle, Then I folded pages in the center and glued and pressed them down. I painted with azo gold and some interference blue. Then I added some metal goodies that were lying around the studio.
